Objectives
The objectives of the 2012 APEC pre-ministerial symposium are to:
- Deliver a research basis on which to develop the APEC education strategic plan for developing students’ 21st Century skills and new postsecondary education systems that can create flexible, adaptable, skillful workforce addressing the demands of the global economy and regional economic integration.
- Share and enhance understanding of this research base as it provides education solutions to critical APEC challenges like the global financial crisis, environmental sustainability, and disaster reduction, especially for developing economies.
- Provide draft recommendations for the APEC education ministers 2012-2016 strategic action plan to meet the challenges of globalization, innovation and cooperation.
Priority Areas
APEC pre-ministerial framework includes four priority areas organized by three sub-themes:
- Globalization demands preparing future students with the future skills necessary to be college and career ready such as:
- Priority Area: Mathematics, Science, Language and Culture Education (Subject areas key to success in the global workforce)
- Priority Area: Technical Vocational Education and Training and Higher Education Quality (systems transitioning students into workers)
- Innovation compels us to create learning systems that challenge students in new ways through innovative tools and reform mechanisms such as:
- Priority Area: Using ICT in Education
- Priority Area: Improving Teacher Quality
- Cooperation brings the APEC community together to collaborate on educational activities.
The framework is based on continuation of ministerial-level priority area work streams (starting in 2004 and realigned in 2008):
