Introduction to International Education Week (IEW)
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is pleased to participate in the celebration of International Education Week, a join initiative of the U.S. Departments of Education and State to highlight the importance of international education and cultural exchange. In partnership with schools, colleges and universities, embassies, businesses, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) and agencies, International Education Week promotes international education and exchange by preparing students around the world to become better oriented to the global marketplace and the diversity of people and ideas that students will inevitably encounter as they enter the today’s multicultural and multilingual global workforce.
In a statement on International Education Week, the U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan noted that "a complete education in the 21st century must teach our children about their interdependent world, and it must prepare them to be good leaders and good global citizens. International awareness and knowledge can help our children build the skills needed to communicate and cooperate with those from other nations and other cultures." This joint initiative was first held in 2000, and today is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide.

IEW 2010: Striving for a Sustainable Future
According to Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Janice Jacobs, "During International Education Week, we celebrate the diversity foreign students bring to campuses around the United States and acknowledge the invaluable experiences of American students abroad. When foreign students sit side-by-side with American students in classrooms around the world, they exchange new ideas, challenge old stereotypes, and gain immeasurable knowledge from and about each other." In keeping with the 2010 theme of “International Education: Striving for a Sustainable Future,” APEC has developed several resources to assist students and educators alike. These resources provide students with some of the knowledge and skills required to become successful business leaders in today’s global world, students and instructors information on the importance of the use of correct language while conducting international business, a variety of teaching tips discussing the needs of today’s Business English learners, and allow students and educators to build their knowledge and increase awareness of the communities and cultures surrounding the Pacific Region. These are available in the Resources, Toolkits, and Teaching Tips section below.
