Workshop on School Earthquake and Tsunami Safety in APEC Economies

Date: 17-19 October 2011

Location: Chinese Taipei

Description: In support of reducing the risk from natural hazards in all APEC economies, the United States, Chinese Taipei, Australia and Peru are sponsoring a collaborative project, School Earthquake and Tsunami Safety in APEC Economies, Reducing Risks and Improving Preparedness. APEC’s Emergency Preparedness Working Group (EPWG) will hold a workshop on October 17 to 19, 2011 in Chinese Taipei to further collaboration, discussion of lessons learned and concerns. This important workshop will provide member economies an opportunity to discuss the risk to schools from natural hazards and learn from each other about measures to reduce the risk. Participant nominations are hereby requested.

APEC Seminar on Capacity Building for Policies & Monitoring of Cross-Border Education in the APEC Region

Date: 27-28 June, 2011

Location: Shanghai, P.R. China

Description: The Seminar will share research findings of the project and raise awareness of relevant issues while providing an opportunity for policy makers and experts to discuss how to promote cooperation and strengthen management in this field among APEC economies. APEC funding is available for up to 2 active participants from travel-eligible economies. Subject to meeting eligibility requirements, the cost of air-ticket (status: economy class) and daily allowance to cover accommodation, meals and incidentals will be funded.

Description: The United States will host APEC in 2011 for the first time since 1993. Meetings will take place in Washington, DC; Big Sky, Montana; and San Francisco, California, culminating in the APEC Leaders’ Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii in November 2011.

APEC-University of Tsukuba Fifth International Conference

Date: 17-20 February 2011

Description: Since 2006, 19 APEC member economies have been participating in the APEC-HRDWG Mathematics Lesson Study project proposed by Japan and Thailand. It has great influence on the establishment of Lesson Study Movements in other subjects such as Science and English as for second language. For the innovation of teaching approaches with computer, the Fifth International Conference focuses on textbooks and educational tools in mathematics, especially e-textbooks as for newest tools in teaching mathematics. The targets of the conference are as follows:

  • Sharing the methods of teaching with textbooks and knowing theories on curriculum and textbooks
  • Elaborating the model approaches using textbooks to develop mathematical thinking and communication
  • Sharing the various ways of utilizing traditional equipments in classroom such as blackboards as well as projectors and computers
  • Knowing the innovative tools to develop e-textbooks and sharing the methods of teaching

APEC Small and Medium Enterprise Summit 2010

Date: 11 November 2010

Description: The APEC SME Summit 2010 will address crucial issues for SMEs, such as entrepreneurship, sustainable business practices, access to the global markets, access to finance, development of human capital, and utilization of information technology. The programme of the conference will be relevant to the APEC Growth Strategy and its different perspectives, in particular, inclusive growth.

Participants will be able to learn, from APEC Leaders and Ministers, about beneficial policy measures in member economies that foster business environments in which SMEs can thrive. SME managers, including women and young, will share the best practices of overcoming challenges in innovative and effective ways.

We anticipate about 400 participants from government agencies, business communities, aid agencies, financial institutions, universities, and research institutions within the APEC region.


APEC Workshop on Higher Education Diploma Supplement

Description: This workshop is a follow up on Profect stage 1: research study of existing diploma supplements and those in development amongst APEC member economies. The aims of this project are to: 1) raise awareness of diploma supplements (DS) as a tool for increasing transparency and reliability of information about higher education systems in the APEC region; 2) share information on existing DS and those in development in APEC region economies; and 3) identify capacity building needs of economies in their efforts to develop and implement DS.

APEC Women’s Entrepreneurship Summit in 2010

Date: 1 October 2010

Description: The summit will provide opportunities for conducting interactive discussion among business leaders, successful women entrepreneurs, and government officials, and make policy proposals to address the problems facing female entrepreneurs. In particular, participants will include female entrepreneurs from developing and developed economies, local women entrepreneurs, prominent business executives, as well as government participants for the APEC SME Ministerial Meeting.

5th Human Resource Development Ministerial Meeting

Date: 16-17 September 2010

Location: Beijing, People's Republic of China

Description: Ministerial delegations from the 21 APEC economies, representatives from APEC Secretariat and committees, and APEC official observers will be invited to the meeting.  The main theme of the meeting is “Developing Human Resources, Vigorously Promoting Employment and Achieving Inclusive Growth”, with three sub-theme sessions :

  • Devoting priority attention to maintaining and expanding employment and adopting employment-oriented macro-economic policies;
  • Improving social safety net and reinforcing social protection and employment assistance for the vulnerable groups;
  • Enhancing human resources capacity building to prepare the workforce for revitalizing economic growth.

The meeting is expected to adopt with a Joint Ministerial Statement, an Action Plan, and an APEC multi-year technical cooperation program in the area of human resources development.
